Leveraging digital technology to transform Plan País's online presence, the project aimed to create a user-centric website that reflects the organization's impact and facilitates diaspora engagement.
The Plan País website redesign project aimed to elevate the organization's digital presence, matching its impact on the Venezuelan diaspora in the US. Through comprehensive research, design, and development, the project transformed a course assignment into a live website redesign. Key outcomes include a fully-functional coded website, established brand identity, and improved user experience. The project showcased the power of digital technology in connecting communities and professionalizing non-profit organizations.
Problem
Plan País, despite being the leading platform uniting the Venezuelan diaspora in the United States, lacked a digital presence that matched its impact and prestige. The organization needed a more professional image to effectively represent its mission, participants, and team members. This project addressed the disconnect between Plan País's significant influence and its online representation, aiming to create a digital platform that would facilitate better engagement with the Venezuelan community and showcase the organization's leadership in diaspora unification efforts.
Solution
The project faced time constraints as it evolved from a course assignment to a live redesign. The stakes were high, as the website serves as the primary digital touchpoint for the Venezuelan diaspora in the US. Success would significantly impact Plan País's ability to connect with its community and showcase its leadership role.
The objective was to plan, research, design, and code a fully-functional, five-page website.
I continued the process and utilized this final project to apply it as phase one for a live website redesign for Plan País. Doing this preliminary HTML/CSS (with Javascript) website redesign allowed me to do three things beyond the purpose of portraying proficiency in coding:
🧠 Research and analyze in detail the design decisions that were being planned for the live website 📢 How to efficiently communicate these design choices with the Board Members of the organization 👩🏻💻 How to best present and organize specific information to the users on the live website
Design Process
Phase 1:
Research
- User interviews
- Identify pain point and opportunities
Ideation
- Provisional navigation hierarchy
- Low-fidelity wireframes
Development
- Fully-functional website coded from scratch
Phase 2:
Establish Brand Identity
- Brand Identity for website
- Guidelines for marketing collateral creation/collection
Design Prototype
- Sitemap & Navigation Hierarchy (Revised)
- Mid-Fidelity Wireframes
Final Design
- Hi-Fidelity Prototype
The project employed a user-centered design approach, conducting user interviews and analyzing pain points to inform the redesign. Key insights led to simplified navigation, dedicated RSVP and Contact pages, and a focus on informational organization. The resulting features included an intuitive user flow, responsive design, and a cohesive visual identity across digital and print materials.
User Interviews and Pain Points
The research uncovered two key issues:
- Users struggled to find and access information efficiently on the existing website.
- Plan País's digital presence did not adequately reflect its organizational impact and professionalism.
These findings directly shaped the solution. Creating a clear, intuitive information architecture to address user navigation challenges was prioritized. Simultaneously, a cohesive brand identity across all digital platforms to enhace the organizations professional image was developed. This dual focus on user experience and brand representation guided the entire redesign process, ensuring that the new website would both serve user needs effectively and accurately showcase the organization's significance in the Venezuelan diaspora community.
