TLDR
- The importance of smell to user experience: With over 400 olfactory receptors, odor activation in the cerebral cortex happens in 300 milliseconds. This renders smell one of the greatest impacts on the human experience.
- Data is the archeology of modern living: Our data is already out there, and its use is a key element of modern experiences. Data can drive action, especially when combined with a stimulus (like smell).
- Predictive Modeling (AI) for optimal probability outcomes: Our devices hold rich data. This input data collected can be weighted to influence future outputs.
- Understand the importance of designers in the architecture of data collection: Adding the strengths of human-centered design (HCD) to data-driven decisions can unite and improve the intent of data collection and its outcomes on users—in this case, employee experience.
Context
Data can and does significantly impact designers' roles. Still, few examples exist where a designer was also involved in developing the what, when, where, and how the data was collected. So why aren’t designers more involved in designing the data collection process?
This project seeks to explore experiential areas where designers should be through the lens of smell and data to improve the employee experience.

Before choosing “smell” as the main driver for behavioral change, I conducted exploratory stakeholder interviews to validate that smell is a stronger force than music or sounds. After conducting a series of interviews, key pain and gain points where identified.
